Acupuncture is a 3000+ year medicine originating in Asia. It involves the insertion of very fine needles to adjust the flow of energy through pathways in the body, known as meridians. Acupuncture is part of the umbrella of Traditional Chinese Medicine which also includes herbal therapies, nutritional therapies, moxa (an herbal heat treatment), cupping (glass cups placed over the skin to improve circulation), gua sha (another skin technique to improve circulation), and exercise qi gong therapy.

We also emphasize integrating our traditional approach with other medical approaches through our local referral network. We gladly network with other disciplines such as Western medicine, Naturopathic medicine, massage therapy, physical therapy, chiropractic, etc.

Sapphyre Miria, DAOM Lac., Dipl. O.M. graduated with a BS in Biochemistry from Virginia Tech in 2005 and began working in healthcare. She quickly arrived at the conclusion that Western medicine is great for acute injuries and illnesses but not as helpful in curing chronic disease or maintaining healthy homeostasis. This observation left her feeling disillusioned with her career choice, so she shifted gears into organic vegetable seed farming. It was during her ten years as a farmer that she discovered her love of medicinal plants and began studying herbalism in all its forms. Eventually, this love of plants inspired her to return to healthcare but from a more holistic approach. She moved to the Bay Area from the East Coast in 2018 to learn acupuncture and Chinese herbology at the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences in Oakland, CA. She began practicing in ‘22 while she continued her education and obtained her DAOM in August ‘24, followed by a prompt return to Charlottesville, VA in September ‘24. She was trained by Anthony Von der Muhll in Advanced Integrative Orthopedic Acupuncture and Pain Management and utilizes these skills all of the time in her practice. Her favorite modalities in addition to Advanced Orthopedics are Sa’am acupuncture, Shen Hammer Pulse, and Jing Fang herbalism.
